چکیده

AbstructScalability refers to the ability to modify the resolution and/or bit rate associated with an already compressed data source in order to satisfy requirements which could not be foreseen at the time of compression. A number of researchers have already demonstrated the feasibility of efficient scalable image and video compression. The principle focus of this paper is to describe data structures for highly scalable compressed video, which are able to support simple, generic scaling approaches for both constant bit rate and constant distortion scaling criteria. Interactive video material presents particular challenges when the data stream is to be scaled to maintain an approximately constant level of distortion, rather than just a constant bit rate. Special attention is paid, therefore, to the development of generic, robust scaling algorithms for such applications. The data structures and scaling methodologies developed in this paper are particularly appealing for distribution of highly scalable compressed video over heterogeneous media, because they simultaneously support both variable bit rate (VBR) and constant bit rate (CBR) services with a wide range of available service qualities, using only simple, generic mechanisms for scaling. The performance of the proposed scaling methodologies is experimentally investigated using a highly scalable video compression algorithm, which is able to achieve comparable compression performance to that of the inherently nonscalable MPEG-1 compression standard.

Highly scalable wavelet-based video codec for very low bit-rate environment

In this paper, we introduce a highly scalable video compression system for very low bit-rate videoconferencing and telephony applications around 10–30 Kbits/s. The video codec first performs a motion-compensated three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet (packet) decomposition of a group of video frames, and then encodes the important wavelet coefficients using a new data structure called tri-zerotrees (T...

Video Abstraction in H.264/AVC Compressed Domain

Video abstraction allows searching, browsing and evaluating videos only by accessing the useful contents. Most of the studies are using pixel domain, which requires the decoding process and needs more time and process consuming than compressed domain video abstraction. In this paper, we present a new video abstraction method in H.264/AVC compressed domain, AVAIF. The method is based on the norm...

Efficient Scalable DCT-Based Video Coding At Low Bit Rates

It is well-known that flexibility and error resilience are significantly improved by employing a scalable bit stream. The major drawback of multi-layered representations within a motion compensated (MC) discrete cosine transform (DCT) based framework is the increase in bit rate as compared to a single-layered representation having the same frequency, spatial and temporal resolution as in the hi...

ADAPTIVE SCALABLE VIDEO CODING By Emrah Akyol

This thesis is composed of three main parts which include three contributions in slightly different fields, all lying on the same framework: Adaptive Scalable Video Coding. First part is about integration of motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF), the basis for temporal scalability in scalable video coding methods, to the latest non-scalable video compression standard, i.e., H.264/AVC. We...

Lifting-based invertible motion adaptive transform (LIMAT) framework for highly scalable video compression

We propose a new framework for highly scalable video compression, using a lifting-based invertible motion adaptive transform (LIMAT). We use motion-compensated lifting steps to implement the temporal wavelet transform, which preserves invertibility, regardless of the motion model. By contrast, the invertibility requirement has restricted previous approaches to either block-based or global motio...
